Myopia Management for Children
Myopia (nearsightedness) is a rising global epidemic in children worldwide, and progressive myopia in kids is not just about needing stronger glasses each year — high myopia significantly raises the lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Myopia management slows that progression. At Rhode Eyeland, we help families in North Kingstown, Wickford, East Greenwich, and the greater South County area protect their children's long-term vision.
Children whose prescription is changing every year
Kids with one or both myopic parents (genetic risk)
Children spending many hours on near-work and screens
Any child diagnosed with nearsightedness before age 10
Who is a candidate
Specialty soft contact lenses designed to slow elongation of the eye (e.g., MiSight, FDA-indicated for ages 8–12 at the start of treatment)
Low-dose atropine eye drops, backed by years of research
Lifestyle guidance — outdoor time, screen breaks, healthy reading distance
Treatment options we discuss with families
Myopia management works best when started early. Each diopter of myopia avoided in childhood meaningfully reduces lifetime eye disease risk. The conversation is worth having even if you are not sure your child needs it yet — we can establish a baseline and monitor.

As soon as a progressing prescription is identified. The FDA-approved MiSight soft contact lens is indicated for ages 8–12 at the initiation of treatment, but starting any approach early — typically before age 12 — produces the largest long-term benefit.

No — myopia management uses specially designed lenses that work differently from standard contacts. A myopia-management exam is more involved than a routine contact lens fitting.
