Comprehensive Eye Exams
A thorough eye exam is about more than getting a new prescription — it is a window into your overall health. At Rhode Eyeland, our optometrists deliver comprehensive exams that detect vision changes, screen for serious eye disease, and uncover systemic conditions like diabetes and hypertension which often show up in your eyes first.
Visual acuity testing and refraction (your prescription)
Binocular vision and color vision
Slit-lamp examination of the front of the eye, (dry eye screening)
Intraocular pressure check (glaucoma screening)
Retinal evaluation, with dilation as indicated (diabetic, medical evaluation)
Discussion of findings, lifestyle factors, and personalized recommendations
Exams typically include:
Adults overdue for an exam (AOA recommends every 2 years for low-risk adults under 65, annually for adults 65+ or anyone at higher risk)
Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration, or skin cancer
Children — early detection of refractive issues supports healthy eyes
Anyone with new symptoms: headaches, blurry vision, eye strain, double vision, or floaters, and flashes

No. Our optical department is in the same office, so you can browse frames the same day. Also, you can purchase your prescription eyewear from us even if you received your eye exam from someone else.
-
We don't bill vision insurance directly for your eyewear purchase. We'll check your out of network benefits and submit the claim for you so you can get reimbursed.
We use medical insurance for exams and help you use any vision benefits through reimbursement.
We focus on medical eyecare, so we bill your medical insurance (we accept most) for the exam. If you also have vision benefits, we'll help you use those too by filing out of network claims for you - so you're getting the best of both without extra work.

“The doctor was so kind and so thorough… so knowledgeable as well. He did everything to insure I felt comfortable and he did every test to find out what was going on with my eyes.”
